What is the purpose of your visit to the UK?

Why they ask this

UK visa officers are particularly rigorous about stated purpose vs. documentary evidence. Every word you say should be supported by a document in your application.

How to answer

Be precise and detailed. 'I am visiting London and Edinburgh for 12 days. I have hotel bookings, a fully costed itinerary, and a return ticket on October 15th. I want to visit the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, and attend a Premier League match.' Name actual places with dates.

Don't say
  • โœ—"Just tourism generally"
  • โœ—"I want to experience British culture"
  • โœ—"I have family there who will look after me"
Strong examples
  • "I am attending a 2-day workshop at University College London on September 4โ€“5, organized by my professional association. I then have 5 days of tourism with hotel bookings."
  • "I am visiting my daughter who is on a Student visa in Manchester. She graduates in July and I want to attend her ceremony. I return to Kigali on July 25th."

How are you funding this trip?

Why they ask this

UK UKVI is known to scrutinize finances very carefully โ€” particularly the source and consistency of funds, not just the balance.

How to answer

Be specific about the amount, the source (salary, savings, business income), and show it matches your supporting documents. The UK expects GBP ยฃ2,000โ€“ยฃ2,500 minimum for a 2-week visit, with higher amounts for longer stays.

Don't say
  • โœ—"I have enough money"
  • โœ—"My family is helping me"
  • โœ—"I'll use my card when I'm there"
Strong examples
  • "I am funding this trip from my personal savings. My bank statements show a consistent balance of approximately GBP ยฃ4,500 equivalent over the past 6 months, derived from my monthly salary as a pharmacist."
  • "My company is sponsoring my attendance at the London tech conference. I have the company sponsorship letter and they are covering airfare and hotel."

What is your employment situation and when are you expected back at work?

Why they ask this

Employment is the primary tie to home that UK officers look for. They want to know both that you have a job and that the job requires your physical presence.

How to answer

State your employer, title, and years of service. Crucially, state your exact return-to-work date and bring an employer letter confirming this. 'I am a Senior Engineer at Safaricom. I have 6 years of service. My manager has approved leave from October 2โ€“14 and I am required back on October 15th.'

Don't say
  • โœ—"I work remotely so I can work from anywhere"
  • โœ—"I'm freelance"
  • โœ—"I don't really have fixed working hours"
Strong examples
  • "I am the Finance Manager at MTN Rwanda. My team meets every Monday and I chair those meetings. I return to work on September 20th."
  • "I am a civil servant in the Ministry of Education. My annual leave was approved for 3 weeks and my return is documented in my leave letter here."

Where will you be staying in the UK?

Why they ask this

UK officers check that your stated accommodation is specific and confirmed โ€” not vague or aspirational.

How to answer

Provide full addresses. Bring hotel confirmation printouts or an invitation letter from your UK host with their full address and proof of their UK immigration status.

Don't say
  • โœ—"With a friend โ€” I'll get the address later"
  • โœ—"In London somewhere"
  • โœ—"On Airbnb, I haven't booked yet"
Strong examples

Have you previously visited the UK or Schengen countries?

Why they ask this

Prior visa compliance history is very important for UK applications. Entry and exit within visa conditions demonstrates trustworthiness.

How to answer

Don't say
  • โœ—"No (if you have stamps from prior travel)"
Strong examples
  • "I visited the Netherlands in 2022 on a Schengen visa and the UK in 2021 on a Standard Visitor visa. I left both countries well within my authorized period. I have both passports here with stamps."

Do you have a CAS number from your UK institution? (Student visa)

Why they ask this

The CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is the cornerstone of every Student Route application. Without it, the application is invalid.

How to answer

Provide your CAS number and the institution's details. Confirm you have already paid the IHS surcharge and the application fee.

Don't say
  • โœ—"I am waiting for the CAS"
  • โœ—"My agent is handling it"
Strong examples
  • "Yes, my CAS reference is [number], issued by the University of Leeds on August 1st. I have paid the IHS surcharge of ยฃ2,328 (3 years) and the visa application fee."

What are your plans after your UK visa expires?

Why they ask this

Whether tourist or student, the officer wants assurance that you will leave the UK as required.

Don't say
  • โœ—"I might extend my visa"
  • โœ—"It depends on how things go"

Why they ask this

Don't say
  • โœ—"The UK is more developed"
  • โœ—"I want to experience living abroad"
  • โœ—"The Graduate Route visa lets me stay 2 years after graduation"
Strong examples

Do you have family members in the UK?

Why they ask this

Family in the UK is a pull factor. Officers assess whether your UK ties could motivate you to overstay.

How to answer

Be honest. If yes, state the relationship and their status. Then clearly establish your return plans. 'My brother has been a British citizen for 8 years. I am visiting for 2 weeks only. My job, my house, and my children are in Kampala โ€” I have everything to return to.'

Don't say
  • โœ—"Yes, they've said I can stay as long as I like"
  • โœ—"I might stay with them while I look for opportunities"
Strong examples
  • "Yes, my sister has indefinite leave to remain. I am visiting her for 10 days for a family event. My two children and my husband are in Nairobi, which is the strongest reason I will return."
  • "No, I have no family in the UK. I will be staying at booked accommodation throughout my visit."
