What is the main purpose of your visit to Canada?

Why they ask this

Canada's immigration officers are trained to identify applicants who may overstay or seek unauthorized work. A specific, credible purpose is essential.

How to answer

Name specific destinations, people, or events. 'I am visiting my sister who is a permanent resident in Vancouver. We plan to spend 2 weeks exploring BC before I return to my job in Nairobi on September 14th.' The more specific and internally consistent, the better.

Don't say
  • โœ—"To experience life there"
  • โœ—"To explore opportunities"
  • โœ—"My sister can help me settle"
Strong examples
  • "I am attending the East Africa Trade Expo taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre from August 3โ€“5. I have the event registration here. I return on August 8th."
  • "I am visiting Niagara Falls and Toronto for 10 days with my husband. We have hotel bookings and a return ticket on September 2nd."

Do you have family members currently in Canada?

Why they ask this

Family in Canada is a significant pull factor. Officers assess whether your Canadian ties outweigh your home-country ties.

How to answer

Be honest. If yes: state the relationship, their immigration status, and your confirmed return plans with supporting documentation.

Don't say
  • โœ—"Maybe I'll stay with them a bit longer if I like it"
  • โœ—"They've been encouraging me to move there"
  • โœ—"Yes โ€” they might sponsor me later"
Strong examples
  • "Yes, my brother is a Canadian citizen in Toronto. I am visiting him for his wedding on July 20th. I return to my position at KCB Bank on August 1st."
  • "No, I have no family in Canada. I will be staying at the Delta Hotels Toronto."

What are your financial arrangements for this trip?

Why they ask this

Canada expects applicants to demonstrate they can fund their stay without relying on Canadian social services or unauthorized work.

How to answer

State your available funds and match them to your documents. Canada's guideline is approximately CAD $10,000 for most stays. 'I have saved approximately CAD $12,000 in my KCB account over the past 8 months, as shown in my statements here.'

Don't say
  • โœ—"My cousin will look after me financially"
  • โœ—"I'll figure it out when I get there"
  • โœ—"I have some savings"

  • โœ—"I just started recently"
  • โœ—"I'm self-employed (without documentation)"

Have you traveled internationally before?

Why they ask this

Prior travel โ€” especially to developed countries with respected visa entry โ€” shows you have been trusted before and returned as required.

How to answer

Don't say
  • โœ—"No, this is my first time traveling (but you have stamps)"
  • โœ—"I went somewhere once I think"
Strong examples
  • "I visited the UK in 2022 on a Standard Visitor visa and returned as scheduled. I also attended a conference in Amsterdam in 2023 on a Schengen visa. My previous passports with stamps are here."
